Earth Hour: why little things mean a lot

Are you participating in Earth Hour 2023? All you have to do is switch off your lights on Saturday 25 March between 20:30 - 21:30 Central European Time. And you'd be doing Mother Earth a big favour in the battle against climate change. Not so much in terms of environmental impact, because how much planet saving can you do in 1 hour, but more in promoting the cause. It's the little things that mean a lot in everyday behaviour.

Organised by the World Wildlife Fund since 2007, Earth Hour is an annual event raising awareness about the urgent need for positive climate action. By turning off non-essential lights for one hour, you can show your commitment to the planet and help demonstrate the collective power of small actions.

During Earth Hour 2021, an estimated 17.34 million kilograms of CO2 emissions was saved worldwide. To put this into perspective, that’s equivalent to taking 3.7 million cars off the road for one hour. A drop in the ocean, sure, but Mother Earth needs every ounce of help she can get.

Your clothes may save 86% on CO2 emissions.

Five things that help

According to the IPCC report, these are the top 5 measures to halve CO2 emissions by 2030.

Reduction of fossil fuels. The world still depends for 90% on fossil fuels, that's got to change.

Renewable energy. The costs for solar and wind energy have dropped 85% the past decade, so let's switch.

A circular economy. Design products not for one-time use or even recycling, but for perpetual use over and over again.

Carbon capture and storage. Not just reduce CO2 emissions, but clean up what's already there.

Greener cities. Cities geared to walking, cycling and public transport are healthier and happier places.

Sustainability is not just about participating in symbolic events like Earth Hour once a year. It's about making conscious choices every day, including your clothing choices. By choosing sustainable clothing options, you can help reduce the negative impact that the fashion industry has on the environment. For example, our eucalyptus basics save around 95% on water and 86% on CO2 emissions, compared to conventional cotton clothing (read more).

As consumers, we have the power to drive change by choosing to support sustainable brands like Saint Basics, and by making conscious clothing choices. By opting for sustainable materials, reducing our consumption, and investing in high-quality pieces that are designed to last, we can contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable world. And as Earth Hour teaches us, small actions, however insignificant they may seem, really mean a lot. So dress for a more sustainable future. A cleaner world starts with switching off unnecessary light and putting on better underwear. Let's get the basics right!
